Описание
Ants Laikmaa lived most of his life in countryside and in the 1920s he started to build his home in Kadarpiku village near Taebla, about 10 km from Haapsalu. In 1932 he finished his activities in his art studio-school in Tallinn and moved to Taebla to stay there all year round.

Today it is open for the public not only as his museum but also as a unique piece of architecture with a genuine atmosphere. The romantic house and summer cottage both have thatched roofs.

His dream home was actually never completed. Whole building process was quite a challenge because his plans with the house were grandiose, but he lacked money to complete them. His health also worsened and he finally passed away without seeing his home finished. He died in 1942 and was buried in the self created 7-hectare park rich with its species of trees and plants.

The property was opened as a museum in 1960 and is definitely worth a visit due to the natural beauty, attractive architecture and interesting museum. This museum is a filial of Läänemaa Museum (established in 1929). By the way, Laikmaa was one of the first active donator of antiquities.

The Romantic House and Summer Cottage

The whole house-museum exposition is set up in the romantic living house. The exposition covers many aspects of the artist's life. There are several original tools and requisites belonged to the artist. His modest and simple furniture is also kept in the house.

On the first floor of the house with unique archi- tecture an exposition introducing the life of the artist, a dining room and his daughter's memorial room are located. The artist's studio, working and sleeping rooms with personal belongings and ethnographic antiquities are upstairs. There are also artist's original paintings and paintings from his students.

Behind the living house there is the summer cottage made from clay (built in 1923). Artist called it humorously as "My Tusculum". The cottage was build near the clay pit in the park because the building process of the living house was difficult and slow. The cottage with the two rooms and kitchen has quite high kelba and high thatched roof. At the first it seems that the cottage is build of round logs but actually it's made from clay and only from outside covered with imitated slabs.

The Park

After completion of his summer cottage in 1923 he started spending summers with his elder friends in there. With the help from his friends Laikmaa created a 7-hectare park that is rich in its species of trees and plants. Step by step he designed the land into the beautiful park with the alley with his students who stayed at his summer home for summer practice. His goal was to design a natural forest park with many different species of trees and plants.

There are two alleys of birch trees starting from the house - one takes to the near forest and another to the summer cottage. The alley of juniper trees goes to the his grave. The grave is on top of the small hillock surrounded by fir-trees. In 1956 the granite monument with the artist's bas-relief was set up. The author of the statue is sculptor Juhan Raudsepp.

Some 30 meters before the monument in the middle of the fir-trees alley the branched lime tree is standing as the symbolic gate to the last place of his eternal rest.

In the park there are more than 250 different species of plants and trees. There are many trees planted by Laikmaa himself. There are also nine oaks named and dedicated to the writers who had been visiting him:

1.The oak dedicated to Gustav Suits,
2.The branched oak dedicated to Marie Under and Arthur Adamson,
3.The branched oak dedicated to Hermann Halliste and to his wife Erika,
4.The oak dedicated to Dagy, the daughter of Marie Under;
5.The oak to Edda, the another daughter of Marie Under;
6.The big branched oak dedicated to Friedebert Tuglas and to his wife Elo;
7.The oak dedicated to Aino Tamm;
8.The oak dedicated to Aino Kallas;
9.The oak dedicated to Anna Haava.
Some writers, like Marie Under, Friedebert Tuglas, Gustav Suits and others, were his dear friends and frequent quests of his.

The little summer cottage is right place to sell different art works and handworks. The park is good place for different events and best place for outgoing trip.
