Beskrivelse
Ebavere nature-hiking trail is in Ebavere Landscape Reserve, 3 km from Väike-Maarja in the direction of Tartu. While approaching the hill, you can see signposts EBAVERE JOOKSURAJAD SUUSARAJAD (jogging and ski trails). There are also information boards, car park and a sign EBAVERE TORN. MATKARADA (Ebavere Tower. Hiking trail). The hike begins here.
The hiking trail is five kilometres long, but you can also take a shorter hike. It would be the best to go on foot, but it is also possible to ride a bike there. The trail is covered with sawdust and because of that, it is a bit soft.
The hike begins with a small slope down and then there is a steep slope up. After passing the houses, you should choose whether to turn left (ski trails in winter) or right to the trail taking you to the Tower.
Ebavere is the hill of sacred grove, where ancient Estonians had the wooden sculptures of their gods, which they worshipped there. They also made sacrifices. The Henrik Chronicles of Livonia describe the scene of cutting down the sculptures as follows: "... and the crowd was in disbelief that there was no blood running".
The hiking trail turns south from the Tower and takes you near Vao road. It is possible to take a shortcut before that if you turn right and take one of the smaller paths. Later you can also shorten your hike following the signposts.
It is nice to enjoy the nature while hiking. There are 12 information boards along the trail presenting 48 plants, bushes, birds and animals you can actually find in Ebavere. Try to find them in the nature!
In case you have more time, go and find the place where Admiral Johan Pitka's house used to be. It is on the foothills of Ebavere near Vao road.
Ebavere landscape reserve is 28 km from Rakvere when you take Väike-Maarja - Vägeva - Tartu road and 17 km from Rakke if you come from Tartu. |
