Description
- An old roadside tavern, 74 km from Tallinn towards Narva.
- Close to the seacoast and the manors: Palmse, Sagadi and Vihula.
- Kadrina, a commune centre is 17 km from Viitna.
- Rakvere, a centre of Lääne- Viru county 27 km.
Viitna was known already in the Middle Ages. In the 19th century there were fourteen taverns by the route Tallinn-Narva. Taverns were used as post stations, for lodging and people could have their meals as well.
On the left there was a stable for the horses of the rich folk and two rooms for the gentry. Now there Now one can eat and buy also some articles of traditional Estonian handicraft. To the right there was a taproom for the poor folk. A hearth was at the base of the chimney. A stable for the poor folk's horses was at this end. Now here is the tavern's restaurant.
The wooden tavern has been restored after the fire. It was reopened in July 1993.
