Description
To reach the island we suggest booking he boats in advance. One boat is for 12 people maximum. In case of a squall the trips are canceled.

Osmussaar (Odensholm) is a marvellous little island in north-western Estonia. The well preserved coastal embankments of large pebbles contrast with scenic coastal meadows and alvars. In the centre of the island there are overgrown relic lakes and to the north, a region of overgrown pre-war wooded meadows. At the beginning of May during the north-bound migration, up to a million waterfowl can occur here, filling the sky with their wings and the air with their cries.
The island is unique for it's geological landscape formed by numerous earthquakes, and the history is also of great interest to visitors. The island first rose from the sea around 3,000 years and was already well known by the Viking era. The Swedish variation of the name of the island is associates with the name of Scandinavian god Odin. Peaceful life ended in Osmussaare in 1940. With the break of war the whole island was evacuated and the island was made into a naval base. The last decade witnessed Osmussaar turning into a civil island again, but the crazy military past has left traces that cannot be erased. But that is also a part of the history of the island.

Osmussaare Landscape Preservation Area was created in 1996. The island was reinhabited in 2001, the only family living here is in sheep raising business. Due to its location Osmussaar is a sea observation point and a base for the coastguards also now during the Estonian independence.
